River Vecht
The Dutch river Vecht is a fine example of a ‘country river’. Winding it’s way along open land and lakes, through small towns and along castles, the river is a romantic goal for Dutch and tourists alike, as it was for the Romans in ancient times. It’s main importance, however, lies halfway Utrecht and Amsterdam, where the river banks are dotted with a huge number of stunning estates that were built during the Dutch Golden Age. If you ever want to see what the wealth of the 17th century Dutch merchants looked like, this is the place to be.
